A TRACE clinic is more likely to last when participants leave with one movement task they can actually repeat at home. That usually means narrowing the session to a single skill, giving it a short cue, and deciding in advance how the athlete or coach will check whether the cue still holds a few days later.
That approach also keeps expectations realistic. TRACE and video review can support movement learning and follow-up, but they are still coaching aids rather than proof that a skill is fully retained. Digital support may help short-term adherence in home exercise settings, although the evidence is mixed in quality and less certain over longer periods 2Do digital interventions increase adherence to home exercise rehabilitation? A systematic review of randomised controlled trials. · Archives of physiotherapy · 2022. A systematic review found that adding digital support to home exercise programs may improve short-term adherence, but longer-term effects were less certain and study quality varied.. In Colab, TRACE practice and review are described as part of a connected coaching workflow, with the next decision still left to the coach rather than to a score alone 3Athlete Performance Analysis & Readiness | Colab Sports · Colab Sports official product page · 2026. Colab’s product page says TRACE practice and ECHO review feed into one explainable next action, with source context visible and coaching judgment still required..
Choose a skill simple enough to repeat well
The biggest mistake in a clinic-to-home plan is trying to send people home with too much. A better design picks one observable movement job that can survive without a full practice environment. In a swim setting, that might be a quiet head position during breathing, a basic streamline shape off the wall, or one piece of turn timing that can be rehearsed safely on land before it is retested in the water.
Simple does not mean trivial. It means the participant can remember the task, set it up with little equipment, and tell when a rep is drifting. For younger athletes especially, adults should keep home practice brief, supervised as needed, and focused on safe repetition rather than fatigue or intensity. If pain, dizziness, or another concerning symptom appears, general coaching cues are not a substitute for medical evaluation.
Before the clinic starts, define the home version in one sentence:
- What exact movement are we keeping?
- What single cue should the athlete remember?
- What does a clean rep look or feel like?
- How will the athlete or coach check it later?
