What to look for after the demo ends
After TRACE practice, pick one visible signal and look for it again when the athlete returns to the task. The best signal is usually the one most connected to the coaching goal, not the one that simply looks the cleanest on video. In swimming, that might be a steadier body line, calmer breathing timing, cleaner catch timing, or a more organized breakout. In another sport, it could be foot placement, trunk position, rhythm, or release timing.
A simple retention check often includes a few basic steps:
- Use one cue rather than a stack of corrections.
- Let the athlete attempt the skill without repeating the cue immediately beforehand.
- Check a later rep after a short reset, transition, or different drill entry.
- Notice whether the same movement feature survives a small context change.
- Ask the athlete to describe what they were trying to feel or do in their own words.
Evidence also suggests that the way a demonstration is combined with practice can matter. Instead of declaring success, the coach waits through a reset and watches the next repeat. If the breathing rhythm and head position are still organized without a fresh reminder, that is stronger evidence of retention than the first improved attempt alone.

How to build a practical retest
A good retest is small enough to fit normal practice and clear enough to answer one question. The goal is not to create a formal exam. It is to remove the crutch of the immediate prompt while keeping the task familiar enough that the athlete has a fair chance to show what stayed.
Most retests use one or more of these changes:
- a short delay before the next check
- a slightly different drill or entry into the same skill
- a small increase in task demand
- a return to the skill later in the same session or at the next practice
Start by deciding what success would actually look like. If the cue was about catch timing, what visible sign would tell you the timing held? If the cue was about body position, where in the stroke cycle should you look? Narrowing the target keeps the coach honest and gives the athlete a fair problem to solve.
