Your First ECHO Review Film, Upload, Understand, Practise
Colab SportsSeptember 16, 2026
A practical first ECHO review starts with one coaching question, one useful clip, one cue, and one retest so the next practice rep has a clear purpose.
Your first ECHO review does not need to feel like a full technical breakdown. A better starting point is smaller and more useful: film one rep that answers one coaching question, review it, choose one cue, and take that cue into the next practice repetition.
That also makes it easier to judge whether Colab fits the way you already coach or train. If you are still comparing options, begin with membership information and a plain-language overview of how LOOP works. Then, if the setup makes sense for your situation, you can move into a first review in Filmroom. For broader background on the tool itself, What Is ECHO? From Training Clip to Movement Review explains where video review fits in the wider coaching workflow.
Begin with one question that video can answer
The fastest way to make a first review useful is to narrow the job before recording. Do not start with a vague goal like “fix my stroke.” Start with one question that a clip might help you see more clearly. In swimming, that might be head movement during breathing, body line off the wall, catch timing, or what changes between setup and entry on a start.
A shorter clip is often more practical than a long one because it keeps the review tied to a single decision. You want enough footage to see the action begin, happen, and finish, but not so much that the athlete walks away with several corrections and no clear priority.
Pick one skill question for the session.
Film the full action, not only the middle of it.
Choose an angle you can repeat on the retest.
Keep the clip simple enough to review soon after the rep.

Use Filmroom to anchor the review to the source clip
Once the clip is uploaded, the main job is not to produce a long report. It is to connect the filmed rep to the next coaching decision. Colab describes ECHO as making movement reviewable over time and says Filmroom keeps the source clip, comparisons, coach notes, and session history together, while coaches keep the next decision human 1Athlete Performance Analysis & Readiness | Colab Sports · Colab Sports (website) · 2026. Colab says ECHO makes movement reviewable over time, Filmroom keeps source clips and notes together, and coaches retain the next decision.. That matters because it helps keep the conversation tied to what was actually filmed instead of a fuzzy memory of the rep 1Athlete Performance Analysis & Readiness | Colab Sports · Colab Sports (website) · 2026. Colab says ECHO makes movement reviewable over time, Filmroom keeps source clips and notes together, and coaches retain the next decision..
For a first pass, watch the clip once for the whole pattern. Then watch it again for the moment most related to your question. If the question is breathing, you may care most about what happens just before the breath and just after it. If the question is a turn, the key moment may be the change from approach into rotation and push-off.
One clear cue is usually enough for a first review. Make it observable and repeatable rather than broad or abstract. “Return the head to line earlier” is easier to test than “look smoother.” “Hold the streamline a little longer off the wall” is easier to retest than “be more efficient.”
Here is an illustrative example, not a documented athlete case: a coach films one freestyle length to check whether breathing is disrupting alignment. After review, the coach does not list every issue in the stroke. Instead, the coach gives one cue such as “return the head to line before the recovering hand passes the goggles,” then asks for another controlled rep from the same angle.
Turn the review into one practical change in the next rep
The review only matters if it changes practice. That is why a first ECHO session should move quickly from seeing to doing: film, review, cue, rehearse, retest. Video can support learning, but the learning still has to happen in actual movement practice.
One small swimming study comparing different feedback modes during glide practice found improvement across groups, with the software-plus-verbal condition outperforming the other tested feedback conditions in that specific setting 3Comparison of modes of feedback on glide performance in swimming. · Journal of sports sciences · 2012. This small swimmer study found all feedback groups improved in glide practice, with software-plus-verbal feedback performing best in that study.. That does not prove the same result for every athlete, stroke, age group, or app workflow, but it does support a practical coaching idea: feedback is more useful when it leads to a specific next action rather than staying as passive review 3Comparison of modes of feedback on glide performance in swimming. · Journal of sports sciences · 2012. In practice, that usually means keeping the first retest limited to one cue and one comparison. Ask the athlete what changed in the rep and whether the cue matched what they felt. Then compare the new clip with the first one. If the change is visible and repeatable, you may keep the same cue and slightly raise the task demand. If the change is unclear, simplify the language or reduce the task before filming again.
Keep the first retest close to the original review.
Use the same filming angle when possible.
Compare the athlete’s feel with what the clip shows.
Make your first review part of a repeatable coaching habit
The best outcome from a first ECHO review is not novelty. It is a process you can repeat next week with less guesswork. When the source clip, saved cue, comparisons, and coach notes stay together, it becomes easier to check whether the same idea is showing up again across sessions rather than treating each review as a one-off event 1Athlete Performance Analysis & Readiness | Colab Sports · Colab Sports (website) · 2026. Colab says ECHO makes movement reviewable over time, Filmroom keeps source clips and notes together, and coaches retain the next decision..
It is also worth keeping the limits clear. A reviewed clip can help with pattern recognition, communication, and practice planning, but it is not a medical diagnosis, a precise laboratory motion capture system, or a stand-alone clearance to train. Evidence limits matter beyond video too.
